Jeff Bezos–backed Project Prometheus has raised roughly $6.2 billion, hired more than 100 employees, and quietly absorbed agentic computing startup General Agents. The acquisition followed an off-the-record June AI dinner in San Francisco: founder Vik Bajaj formed an acquisition entity the next morning and merged it with General Agents four days later. Cofounder Sherjil Ozair, formerly of DeepMind and Tesla, and several colleagues joined Prometheus. Their core product, Ace—a “real-time computer pilot” capable of executing cross-app tasks in under 15 seconds—appears central to the deal.
Prometheus remains publicly opaque: its formal name, headquarters, and founding date are undisclosed. But LinkedIn updates show more than 30 researchers joining recently, including former Nvidia scientist Kamyar Azizzadenesheli and Transformer coauthors Ashish Vaswani and Jakob Uszkoreit as founding advisers. General Agents’ public website, product updates, and job postings remain live, and its India-based training team lead has also moved to the Bezos venture. Prior ties between Bezos and Bajaj through biotech ventures (Grail, Xaira) hint at Prometheus’s ambitions in AI-enabled manufacturing across computers, automobiles, and spacecraft.
Industry reaction is mixed. Donely, an Ace competitor, notes that General Agents’ breakthrough was “speed”—its locally run agent operates at near-instantaneous pace, a capability rivals have struggled to match. Some investors welcome the removal of a respected competitor; others fear going head-to-head with a Bezos-funded entrant. Overall, Prometheus’s heavy funding, stealth operations, and consolidation moves position it as a major force in the emerging agentic AI ecosystem.
