On June 11th, the war in Ukraine reached a somber milestone by lasting 1,568 days, officially exceeding the duration of the First World War. Despite high human costs, including an estimated 1,000 Russian casualties daily, the conflict remains locked in a stalemate with peace talks stalled.

While American assistance has dried up, Europe is preparing to disburse a €90 billion ($104 billion) loan to support Ukraine's war efforts. Additionally, on June 15th, the 27 EU member states plan to open the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine's accession to the bloc.

Drawing parallels to the lessons of the 1919 Versailles Treaty, any future peace will require strong security guarantees and compromise rather than mere retribution. To secure stability, European nations may face difficult choices, including lifting sanctions and releasing frozen Russian assets.
