Before the end of 2025, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) traced a steep arc: a remark in an X interview roughly three months before the election became a White House office, amplified by theatrical promises to cut $1 trillion and then $2 trillion from government.

Implementation relied on corporate-style disruption. Musk sent a “Fork in the Road” resignation email to more than 2 million federal workers, seized control of agencies, and triggered legal pushback that blocked or reversed many firings. A Cato Institute estimate puts 2025 departures at 271,000, mostly voluntary; NPR cites typical annual turnover of about 6%–8%, rising to roughly 12.5% this year, with some agencies later hiring back staff.

The numbers did not match the rhetoric. Fact-checkers flagged errors and exaggerations, and DOGE’s own savings tally topped out around $214 billion and was still described as overstated. CBO figures show total federal spending rose from $6.7 trillion in fiscal 2024 to $7.0 trillion in fiscal 2025. After Musk attacked Trump’s tax-and-spending bill in May and highlighted his $300 million campaign spending, Trump threatened to end subsidies and contracts; Tesla fell 14%. DOGE was officially disbanded in November, eight months early, and Musk later framed politics as a “blood sport,” while attending a Nov. 19 White House dinner.
