Since Donald Trump's return to the White House last year, the US tourism industry has fallen into a trough due to his on-again, off-again tariffs, tightened borders and visa policies, and troop deployments. According to Tourism Economics, this caused the US tourism industry to lose up to $16.6 billion in 2025, and it is headed for an additional $21 billion deficit this year, with administration policies being the primary contributor.

Although the World Cup is expected to attract over 1.2 million foreign fans this summer and global tourism is projected to grow in 2026, international arrivals to the US are not expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels until 2029. High-spending tourists from Western Europe and China have declined, and visits from Canada have plunged due to tariff threats and trade disputes, allowing Mexico to displace Canada as the top source market.

Proposed changes to the ESTA visa waiver system requiring extensive personal information are expected to deter millions of visitors, causing billions in lost spending. Furthermore, the World Cup has not generated the anticipated hotel booking boom, with most hoteliers reporting reservations below expectations, while declines in student visas and business travel are further shrinking the segment of high-spending visitors to the US.
