Taiwan is preparing to tighten export controls on artificial intelligence chips to further align with US restrictions, joining a clampdown on the smuggling of cutting-edge semiconductors to China. Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin stated that Taipei plans to add AI servers and advanced semiconductors to its list of controlled items, aligning with commitments made in the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade signed by the US and Taiwan this year.

Once the new measures take effect, shipping restricted AI hardware to China will become a criminal offense under the Foreign Trade Act. Although the US has long restricted Chinese purchases of chips from Nvidia and AMD, billions of dollars' worth of hardware have still entered China through a black market over the past few years, while Taiwan currently does not treat unauthorized AI chip exports to China as a crime and can only prosecute suspected smugglers under other existing local laws.

These controls will represent some of the strictest measures by President Lai Ching-te's administration to safeguard Taiwan's technological and national security interests while addressing US concerns over export controls. Additionally, Kung revealed plans to raise billions of dollars to develop industrial parks in the US, establishing a foundation for a comprehensive domestic supply chain for Nvidia and other AI hardware manufacturers.
