Over the coming decades, America’s Silent and Baby Boomer generations will transfer an unprecedented $110trn in wealth to their descendants, stoking widespread fears that the Great Wealth Transfer will entrench an insurmountable inheritocracy that suffocates meritocracy and capitalist dynamism. However, a decade of empirical research examining comprehensive administrative tax records reveals a far more optimistic reality. Private enterprise operators dominate America's top 1%, comprising roughly 3m business owners with an average net worth of around $25m. Collectively holding more than ten times the combined wealth of the entire Forbes 400 list, only a quarter of these “Everywhere Millionaires” inherited their operating companies, proving that hereditary plutocracy has not yet materialized.
Empirical evidence demonstrates that dynastic business wealth undergoes rapid mean reversion: only 12% of children born to the top 1% remain in that elite echelon, while 40% fall out of the entire top income quintile. Unlike first-generation founders who relentlessly reinvest corporate earnings, scions who grow up affluent disproportionately squander capital on luxury consumption—such as superyachts and private jets—and typically exhaust inheritances within a decade. Operating companies commanded by family CEOs underperform professionally managed peers, reflecting the reality that executive acumen cannot be genetically inherited, causing family-centric operating wealth to wither quickly across successive generations.
This corporate stagnation triggers robust market self-correction, creating avenues for ambitious non-inheritors and professional capital. When Larry Miller was demoted by an auto dealership owner seeking to elevate his eight sons, Miller launched an independent venture that expanded into over 60 dealerships and the NBA's Utah Jazz; notably, only 20% of large American firms remain family-controlled, compared to 40% internationally. Furthermore, enterprising MBAs deploying search funds and private-equity sponsors increasingly acquire languishing mid-market family enterprises to restructure and professionalize them. To preserve this economic dynamism and ensure civic fairness, policymakers must reform eroded estate- and inheritance-tax systems, eliminating generous exemptions exploited by affluent donors and business-owning lawmakers.
