The Swift observatory, which has been studying gamma-ray bursts since 2004, has operated well beyond its original lifespan. However, increased solar activity in 2024 expanded Earth's upper atmosphere, causing greater drag on the satellite and accelerating its orbital decay, with reentry expected before the end of 2026.

In response to Swift's rapidly deteriorating orbit, NASA planned a rescue mission. They enlisted Katalyst Space Technologies to launch the LINK spacecraft, which was intended to capture Swift with mechanical arms and boost it to a safer operating altitude.

Unfortunately, the rescue mission was canceled after the LINK spacecraft experienced failures in its attitude control system shortly after launch. Without intervention, Swift will continue its descent and is expected to reenter and burn up in the atmosphere before the end of this year.
