The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) forecasts that electricity consumption by data centers in Australia will rise almost sevenfold over the next decade. By 2035-36, these computing facilities are expected to account for 13 percent of the National Electricity Market's power demand. As aging coal-fired power plants are retired, this trend highlights an urgent need for massive investment in generation and storage infrastructure. (Key numbers: 2035, 2036)

To capture economic benefits while limiting strains on the grid and water supplies, the federal government plans to legislate a national standard for data center resource usage. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that this move aims to prevent community backlash and ensure that new facilities do not crowd out other power needs or drive up electricity bills for the public.

However, the expansion of data centers faces numerous challenges, particularly because their power demand can come online much faster than major energy infrastructure can be built. This disparity increases the risk of grid bottlenecks and higher prices, and could also lead to a greater reliance on fossil fuels, forcing the government and industry to balance sector growth with energy stability.
