The price of erbium, a rare earth element critical to fibre optic cables, telecommunications, and AI data centre construction, has surged by roughly a third over the past two months. The spike is driven by fears that China may reimpose sweeping export controls when a one-year US-China trade truce expires in November 2026. European erbium prices have risen by half since early June, while Chinese prices have climbed over 40 per cent, as traders and end users rush to stockpile ahead of a potential supply cutoff.
China's dominance over rare earth production continues to pose structural risks for Western industries. Moody's has warned that Beijing's export controls have fundamentally altered the risk landscape for European companies, with the automotive sector most vulnerable to supply disruptions that could trigger production delays or shutdowns. In the energy sector, GE Vernova Hitachi and Blue Energy have partnered on a multibillion-dollar project that pairs natural gas turbines with small modular nuclear reactors at a Texas energy campus, aiming to deliver approximately 1 GW of gas power by 2030 and an additional 1.5 GW from up to five SMRs starting in 2032. The model promises cost reductions of 50 per cent or more compared with conventional large-scale nuclear construction.
